Synthesis of complex macromolecular architectures based on poly(N-Vinylpyrrolidone): Via Revesrible Addition Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization
Summary:
In this thesis the synthesis of complex architectures of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) was explored. Initially there was an unfruitful attempt to conduct PNVP star-shaped homopolymers, using DVB as a core. At first the synthesis of linear PNVP took place, followed by the difunctional monomer DVB addition. The results were not what e expected.
Additionally star-shaped homopolymers of PNVP were synthesized using a multifunctional core. The polymers were conducted using the arm first technique, which means that firstly the synthesis of a PNVP arm took place. Continuously the arm was conjugated to a multifunctional core via the formation of amide bond. The results of this synthesis are very promising.
Finally, PS-b-PNVP copolymers were synthesized, exploiting Reversible Addition Fragmentation Transfer, RAFT, polymerization. At first, the synthesis of a polystyrene macro-RAFT agent took place, which was later used for the block polymerization on N-vinylpyrrolidone.
These polymers were characterized structurally and molecularly by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) and Static Light Scattering (SLS).
