The Art of Drawing in the Florentine Renaissance, Α selection of artworks by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) from the Collection of the Ashmolean Museum-University of Oxford.
Summary:
Michelangelo Buonarroti has been one of the greatest artists of High Italian Renaissance Art. Painter, Sculptor, Architect but also an exceptional designer too, he represented most finely the Florentine Renaissance School, which considered the Art of Drawing (‘Disegno’) the most fundamental part in the creation of an artwork.
In this dissertation is being examined the concept of Florentine Renaissance Drawing (‘Disegno’) through a selection of Michelangelo’s artworks from the collection of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology-University of Oxford. The dissertation is divided into seven chapters. In the first four is being analysed a variety of core issues, such as the formation of the Ashmolean’s collection by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1880), theoretical treatises concerning the meaning and the different aspects of ‘Disegno’ in the Italian Renaissance Art, and the foundation and services of the Florentine Academy of Drawing (‘Academia del Disegno’) during the 16o century. One of the chapters is devoted not only to the different categories of Renaissance drawings but also to the drawing materials and techniques too. In this chapter has been made an attempt for the Greek translation of technical terms concerning the Renaissance drawing, already established in the international bibliography, but unfortunately not in the Greek one. Furthermore, apart from the modern terminology, examined in three languages (Greek, English, and Italian), the drawing terms, which were used at Michelangelo’s era are being named here as well.
The last two chapters focus on the artistic creation of Michelangelo. The drawings that are being examined here, are part of two wider artistic projects: the frescos of the Battle of Cascina, in the main hall of the ‘Greater Council’ (‘Maggior Consiglio’) in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence (1501-1505), and the second phase of frescos in the Cappella Sistina ceiling in the Vatican Palace (1511-12). The last part of the dissertation includes the perception of Michelangelo’s drawings over time.
