Synthesis and characterization of poly(styrene oxide) macromonomers and poly(styrene oxide) and poly(ethylene oxide) polymer brushes
Summary:
Poly(styrene oxide) macromonomers with a norbornene functional group were successfully synthesized using anionic polymerization techniques. Statistical and block polymer brushes of poly(styrene oxide) and poly(ethylene oxide), as well as poly(styrene oxide) polymacromonemers, were further synthesized using 3rd generation Grubbs catalyst to induce the ring opening metathesis polymerization of the norbornene end groups. Schlenk and glovebox techniques were used for the ROMP of the macromonomers.
The above polymers were subjected to thermal analysis in order to determine the Tg and Tm as well as the crystallinity of the samples. The characterization of the macromonomers and the polymacromonomers was done via SEC and H1-NMR.
