The sociological, psychological and forensic aspect of domestic violence
Summary:
The purpose of this study is to present the social, psychological and forensic dimensions of domestic violence. In this paper psychiatric, behavioral, cognitive, and sociological theories that illuminate aspects and explain violent behavior from a different perspective are presented. The main forms of abuse are psychological, physical and sexual. According to these findings the main forms of violence women experienced were psychological and physical. The present thesis aims to illuminate this phenomenon by studying 225 women - victims of domestic violence caused by their partner in two years in 2012 and 2017. The sample has been taken from the Forensic and Toxicology Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Data were analyzed by SPSS (version 18). Some of the main findings showed that women were married with two children and their employment status was householding and child rearing. Also, most of the victims were of Greek nationality and aged 16-71. The place where the incidents of abuse occurred was the victim's home, and the most common areas of injuries were the upper and lower limbs, head and torso. When it comes to abusers, the majority of them were of Greek nationality, married and their ages were 18-81 years. Most of them were working in the private sector, but a remarkable percentage of them were unemployed. As for their psychological profile, they did not have any psychiatric disorders and they did not use any psychotropic substances. However, some them were found to have been consuming alcohol at the time of the incident of abuse. Concerning the means of abuse, the majority of the perpetrators appeared to have used their hands and then a combination of the perpetrators’ hands with their legs or some kind of tool. It is noteworthy that the 92.9% of the domestic violence incidents were repetitive, whereas the times when there was no repetition of them were much less. These findings confirm that domestic violence in Greece is in a growing trend, considering the socio – economic crisis that appears to deeply affect the life of a couple. In addition, despite the fact that the character of this paper is mostly descriptive, its findings should be used as a means of pointing the necessity of the immediate interference of the state not only to prevent the phenomenon of domestic violence but to cure and protect its victims as well.
