Exploring the theory of mind in students with Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism
Summary:
The purpose of this literature review is to study the Theory of Mind in students diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism. The term Theory of Mind defines people's ability to understand others' mental faculties such as emotions, thoughts and beliefs. Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism are developmental disorders characterized by deficits in social interaction. Research shows that there is little qualitative differentiation between Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism This paper refers to Autism Spectrum Disorders and it includes an extensive presentation of Asperger's Syndrome with historical data, symptomatology, epidemiology, etiology, as well as diagnostic and differential diagnosis. In the second chapter, the theoretical approaches of the Theory of Mind are presented along and combines with emotions, individual differences, individual characteristics and the family context. In the last chapter, we examine the link between the Theory of Mind and those people who are diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Theoretical approaches and research data seem to show that people with Asperger's Syndrome or high-functioning autism are unable to assess their own and others' mental states and that this deficit is expressed as being unable to take into account the mental states of others. .
