The use of mother tongue in multicultural school environment: empirical research on a group of educators
Summary:
This postgraduate dissertation investigates the importance of foreign students’ mother tongue in the multicultural classrooms of Greek primary school. Some of the secondary questions of this study refer to the teaching method selected by the teachers, the use or not of a communal language between foreign students and their educators and the importance of mother tongue for teaching Greek as a second language. Moreover, the dissertation searches for teachers’ perceptions on students’ mother tongue and a possible dialogue between them and the language used in school; Greek.
The implementation of the research was organized by interviewing teachers of primary schools in the center of Athens, as the schools of this region are composed of students from different cultures and countries. An “Interview Guideline” was structured in order to support the interviews. This guideline includes three categories. The first one is linked to the teachers’ experience and education about teaching Greek as a second language. The second category is about the teaching methods, the communal language and the use of mother tongue by the students. The last category relates to the relationship between the mother tongue and the second language.
Following on from the completion of the research, the majority of the participants tend to be in favor of the use of foreign students’ mother tongue. However, their education in teaching a second language can be characterized deficient. In addition, mother tongue is not completely absent from the Greek classes, although it is used in order to improve learning of Greek language. In conclusion, most of the teachers defend the benefits of mother tongue. Nevertheless, the advantages of a bilingual education remain a controversial issue.
