Depression and Trait Anxiety Between Adolescents with Specific Learning Difficulties and Typical Learners Adolescents
Summary:
Adolescence is often accompanied by appearance of depressive and/or anxiety symptoms. The presence of specific learning difficulties during this period of age may exacerbate the above depressive and/or anxiety symptoms. The purpose of this research work was, therefore, to investigate the levels of depression and the trait anxiety, as a representative and useful indicator of mental health, in general, and anxiety, in particular, between adolescents with specific learning difficulties (SLD) and typical learners adolescents (TL). There were in total 153 participants, 27 of whom belonged to the SLD group and the remaining 126 belonged to the TL group. Participants were provided with two psychometric tests: the Children’s Depression Inventory and the Trait Anxiety Scale. SLD adolescents were found to have a statistically significant higher depression score than TL adolescents, but no statistically significant difference was found in the trait anxiety variable between the two under study adolescent groups. In this context, it is noteworthy that the levels of depression of the two adolescent groups do not touch the spectrum of clinical depression. In conclusion, the increased vulnerability of depression in adolescents with SLD, of which the vast majority perceive it to be difficult in school and had a low and moderate grade in the previous term in Language and Mathematics, demonstrates the need to implement appropriate depression intervention prevention programs in this group of adolescences. Finally, it is suggested that the future replication of this research work be performed on a larger sample of adolescents with specific learning difficulties in order to re-evaluate trait anxiety among the two under study adolescent groups.
