Summary:
In this study , we examine factors that may affect the trademark registration of Greek exporting companies active mainly in the agricultural products sector in foreign countries, having a sample of the above 1314 companies and collecting data from Trademark data base TMview and Word Bank for the period of 1995-2016. Specifically, the factors we consider are the GDP per Capita of each country, the population of each country, the distance of each country from Greece as well as the exports of Greece to the countries where the Greek companies have registered trademarks. Borrowing arguments from the literature concerning the economic crisis in Greece as well as the majority of foreign trademarks in low income countries , we examine the above factors in four different conditions. First ,we examine the total of data, secondly we divide the 1995-2016 period between 1995-2007 and 2008-2016, then we divide the countries into small , medium and high incomes and finally we modify the data and analyse them with the Fixed Effects Negative Binomial Regression. Having 1521 registered trademarks of Greek businesses in foreign countries , we provide evidence that the population of a country plays a positive and significant role in attracting Greek trademarks . In addition , linking the results to the literature, we argue that the agricultural sector is a sector that trademarks are not used so often as they are in other innovation areas.
