Summary:
The present study has the purpose to record the habits of the elderly regarding the consumption of alcohol and the use of benzodiazepines. The first chapter of this study refers to the definition
of the word elderly people, as well as the biological and psychosocial changes that appear to
them. Furthermore, a reference is being made about the diagnostical criteria of the major
depression disorder as well as of the group categorization of the depression symptoms regarding
the elderly from Aaron Beck.
The second chapter presents the term of the word alcohol, followed by a presentation of the
epidemiological data about the global consumption of alcohol firstly. And secondly, about the
comsumption of alcohol in Greece. After that, the conversation turns to the causes of alcohol
abuse and concludes with the presentation of the DSM – V diagnostical criteria for the alcohol
disorder.
The third chapter does an introduction about the definition of benzodiazepines and their medical
use. Then, follows a presentation of epidemiological data about their use globally and in
Greece. The chapter ends with the presentation of the DSM – V diagnostical criteria about the
disorder that cause from the use.
In the last part, the empirical research is presented. The fourth chapter is the part of the
methodology, based on which the research has been developed. The research was conducted in
the community centers for the elderly of the Municipality of Athens. Among other demographic
questions, the participants were asked about their alcohol habits and the use of benzodiazepines.
They also had to answer, based on a scale, about depression and to measure their quality of life.
The essay ends with the fourth chapter focusing on the amount of results, the conclusions and
the conversation followed around them.
