Seeking the Moon: A Tutorial for Teaching the Moon's Orbit around the Earth
Summary:
The present study focuses on the implementation of a teaching intervention in real – world classroom settings that aims to build scientific knowledge of the Moon's revolution around the Earth within a Synodic month. The teaching intervention was divided into two parts. The first one concerned the observation of the Moon in the celestial dome for one month, with the aim of tracking the Moon at a specific time of day and a specific time of night (the organization and implementation of the first part of the research, undertaken entirely by Micha Elli in her diplomatic context of work). The second part of the didactic intervention concerned the implementation of a teaching that would exploit the earlier observations of the students in order to organize constructive activities to approximate scientific knowledge about the Moon's orbit around the Earth. The Moon’s Apparent Motion in the sky was chosen as an appropriate means of building knowledge. The activities were organized to reconstruct the basic alternative idea of pupils, that the Moon appears in the sky every day at the same time (24 hour periodicity of the moon's apparent motion) which is presented by the pupils' perception that the Moon is always visible at night. The results of the teaching intervention showed that most students were able to confront their alternative ideas and to interpret the Moon's orbit around the Earth based on the scientific model.
