Systematic review of prevalence of hepatitis C in children
Summary:
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) still remains a major public health burden more than 30 years since its discovery. It is estimated that 115-185 million people have been infected with hepatitis C virus, from whom 11 million are children aged below 15 years old. Articles describing prevalence of hepatitis C in healthy children, were systematically reviewed. Articles describing prevalence in children that born to HCV infected mothers or children with known risk factor for HCV like thalassemia or HIV, are excluded from the study. Data from fifty-eight studies were analyzed. The total prevalence of HCV in children is estimated to 0.87% and it ranges from 0.34% in Europe to 3.02% in Africa, with a viremic rate of 56.84% in Africa and Asia. Gender of the HCV-infected children was described in twenty-five studies. The total prevalence of HCV infected males was found to 0.7% and it ranges from 0.12% in South America to 2.92% in Africa. Same results were found for HCV infected females. Concerning the age, the total prevalence of HCV infected children aged < 10 years old found to 0.75% whereas the total prevalence of HCV infected children aged > 10 years was 0.97%. The prevalence of HCV infection in children is significant and therefore in order to eliminate HCV, pediatric clinical trials with the new free interferon regimens need to be designed.
