The assessment of the implementation of policies Integration of vulnerable groups (Roma) of the directors of schools of primary education in the transition and retention of Roma in secondary education
Summary:
Abstract
"The negative collective portrayal of the Roma moves along the axis of time because of the dominant perception of a naturally divergent group. The rejection of the school stands out as one of the most serious problems of the Roma in Greece. The number of children enrolled in primary schools could also increase, but in general, most parents register their children to a certain extent according to official statistics. The question is why six years later, half of these children stop attending school and only 4% of them graduate from the Secondary Education. The quality of education received by Roma children is considered as one of the reasons for abandoning the school environment. Based on the above, a survey of primary data was carried out using a questionnaire and aimed at exploring the perceptions of Primary Education Principals on the implementation of policies for the integration of vulnerable social groups (Roma) by the directors of primary education schools in the transition and stay of the Roma in secondary education. The results of the survey showed among others that the actions taken to integrate and keep the Roma students in school were the organization of an event by a responsible group for the reception of Roma students and then the separation of the children in teaching in couples and / groups, consisting of both 'natives' and Roma students, and the continued support of non-class Roma students. Still, the most important inhibiting factors for the successful transition of Roma students to Secondary Education is the reluctance of teachers to engage with them, followed by cultural differences and the parents of "native" students.
