Instrument-based and motive-based homicide study during the period 2013-2018, according to the archives of the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Laboratory of School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Summary:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the criminal characteristics of homicides that took place in the northern, southern and eastern suburbs of Attica as well as in some regions of Boeotia and Euboea during the period 2013-2018.
A retrospective study was conducted on a consecutive series of homicide reported in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens between January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2018, examining the ways through which death was terminated in relation to its underlying motive when the underlying motive was possible to emerge as well as the method of committing homicide.
A total number of 59 homicides was examined. The majority of homicides were committed in the eastern suburbs of Attica (42, 4%) while the homicide rate was increased in 2013 (27,1%) and 2018 (22%), respectively. Our findings reported that the main motive of committing homicide was the unspecified causes (45, 8%) with the use of firearm (42, 4 %) being the most common method of causing death.
The need for a more thorough and detailed examination of some cases such as the case of matricide, the case of fratricide, two cases of domestic violence and the case of retaliation was emerged. For this reason, an extra effort was made to link them to previous literature.
Finally, we consider of paramount importance the depiction of an overall numerical representation of the homicide activity carried out in the greater area of Athens during the period 2013-2018 compared to the homicide activity carried out in the areas under the jurisdiction of the Laboratory. This illustration shows that the largest number of homicides (n = 241) occurred in the central area of Athens and in the wider area as well [Western suburbs], a fact that is well linked to the theory of the geographical "location and development" of crime.
