Summary:
Immigration is a phenomenon with a serious impact for people and, especially, for teenagers, because adolescence is a period of multiple changes. Acculturation, is a process, which is mentioned in this research, and it is directly associated with immigration. In particular, acculturation is a social-psychological process of adaptation when people of different cultures meet up. According to Berry (1997), there are four strategies of acculturation: integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization. Acculturation and component factors are examined in the present research. The sample consisted of 327 adolescent students. One hundred thirty two were from Greece, 170 were second generation immigrants and 25 were first generation immigrants. The results of this study revealed that apropos the relationship between ethnic identity and acculturation strategies for second generation immigrants, it was found that nostalgia mediates the relationship with integration, stress, the motive of companionship and stress, nostalgia and companionship together mediate the relationship with assimilation, motives of emotion and communication mediate the relationship with separation and the motive of escape mediates the relationship with marginalization. Τhere were no statistically significant findings for first generation immigrants about mediators between the relationship of ethnic identity and acculturation. Moreover, according to the results, language of social media predicts assimilation for both first and second generation immigrants. Also, it was found that the knowledge and use of Greek language mediates the relationship between immigrants’ generation and acculturation and nostalgia mediates the relationship between origin and academic performance. Then, the results of the present research were discussed according to previous findings. In the end of the study there is a reference to the limitations, the study usage and suggestions for future research.
