Investigation of the use and effectiveness of alternative methods for smoking cessation
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: In recent years new methods of smoking, electronic cigarette and tobacco heating (IQOS), have been developed. These two smoking alternatives are considered less harmful than traditional smoking, but at the same time satisfy the user's need for smoking.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use and effectiveness of alternative methods of smoking. METHOD-MATERIAL: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted between June and August 2019. The study sample consisted of 100 users of electronic cigarette or IQOS. A self-report questionnaire was used to collect the data, comprising 5 parts: a) demographic and social questions, b) smoking habits questions, c) Fagerstrom Scale, d) Modified Cigarette Evaluation Questionnaire (mCEQ). ) And (e) the Wisconsin Smoking Withdrawal Scale (WSWS). Descriptive statistics, correlations study with parametric and non-parametric tests, linear regression, and Cronbach α scaling reliability test (SPSSv.24, α = 0.05) were performed. RESULTS: The 53% of participants used electronic cigarettes and 47% used IQOS. The 50.0% of the participants were male and the mean age (± TA) was 38.75 (± 13.01) years. The percentage of men who made an electronic cigarette was significantly higher than their IQOS counterpart (60.4% vs. 38.3%, p = 0.0028). Participants' age, place of residence, regular smoking, daily number of cigarettes prior to smoking cessation, number of cigarettes after smoking cessation, method of use, and degree of cigarette smoking desire differed significantly (p <0.05) between participants who made e-cigarettes and those who made IQOS. Also, participants who smoked ecigarette were significantly more addicted to nicotine (p = 0.009) and scored significantly lower on the mCEQ scale (p = 0.043). The withdrawal symptoms from smoking cessation were similar between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Participants after the introduction of alternative smoking methods restricted their habitual smoking and decreased their desire for smoking, however IQOS seems to be more effective.
