Summary:
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the physical abilities, the technical skills and the anthropometric characteristics of young tennis players. One hundred athletes aged 11-14 participated in the study from different tennis clubs in Athens (>2 years of training experience). Following anthropometric characteristics measurements (body mass, height and arm length) the athletes tested in a series of physical fitness and technical skill tests: maximal isometric strength, sprint speed (20 m), lower limb power (counter movement jump), medicine ball throwing, and sport-specific agility and balance tests. Furthermore, athletes were subjected to the International Tennis Number, (ITN), technical assessment test for the main forehand and backhand drives, forehand and backhand volley and serve. Firstly, Pearson correlation coefficient examined the association between physical abilities and technical skills and then factorial analysis was performed with the pivotal axis rotation at a significance level p = 0.05. The results of the research highlighted the importance of selected anthropometric characteristics, sprint speed, and correct technical execution of the basic strokes except for the backhand volley. This study provides useful information for coaches to identify young talented tennis players by evaluating anthropometric characteristics speed as well as technical skills in tennis strokes with the aim to detect and prepare young athletes.
