Summary:
Introduction: The syndrome of the professional exhaustion expresses the exhaustion of buoyancy of a professional who works in the health field, while striving to face the daily working difficulties.
Aim: The aim of this study was to measure the professional exhaustion of the medical - nurse staff that works at the intensive care unit.
Material and method: The control group was 181 people of medical - nurse staff working in three public hospitals, G.N.A. “IPPOKRATEIO”, G.N. NIKAIAS “AGIOS PANTELEIMON” and G.N.A “ELLIKNIKOS ERITHROS STAVROS”. For the collection of the data we used the questionnaire of the recording the professional exhaustion “Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)” by Maslach and Jackson. The statistical analysis was done with the statistical packet SPSS- 23 and the application of the statistical tests t-test and anova. The statistical importance was the level p<0.05.
Result: From the 181 people that took part, the biggest proportion were women, 71,3%. The 16,1% were the doctors, the nurses were the 72,9% and the assistant nurses were the 11,0%. High emotional exhaustion was experienced by 42,5% of the participants, 32,8% medium and 24,9% low. The corresponding numbers in depersonalization were 23,2%, 34,3% and 42,5% and in personal accomplishment were 29,8%, 21,5% and 48,6%. Higher total working exhaustion was experienced by those who work in the cardiologic clinics (p<0,001), the age group 36-40 years old, (p=0,028), the people who did not have the possibility to choose the unit they work in (p<0,001), those who work in units with more than 20 patients (p<0,001), and the participants that are a little satisfied with their work (p<0,001).
Conclusion: The level of exhaustion of the medical – nurse staff depends mostly on working but also demographic factors.
