Nationalism and School Textbooks: The Construction of the Self and the Other
Summary:
The thesis deals with the construction of the national "self" and the national "other" through the textbooks of history. The concepts of nation, nationalism, and the relationship between them are examined. The history of school historiography is analyzed and a qualitative content analysis is then carried out in two different history textbooks, 1982 and 2007, respectively. The aim is to find the methods through which Greekness is constructed of each ethnicity, as well as the relations between us.
