Nation State and the EU: The impact of the EU on the formation of the Greek foreign policy
Summary:
The current essay focuses on the greek foreign policy of the last 50 years, aiming to interpret it with the relevant well-timed theories and alongside the development of the european integration, from the period of the complete absence of any kind of European foreign policy, to the period of its institutional development and concluding with the period of the economic crisis. The greek foreign policy at first started with the realistic aim to deter and balance its rival, Turkey, then was affected from the europeanization process and ended up fully submitted to the normative power of the EU during the period of the economic crisis, when Greece lost its economic and political self-determination. In this new era of fragile balance and relentless competition in an unstable international system, the greek foreign policy should choose its next steps with wisdom, sobriety and maturity, in order to secure the survival of the greek nation-state, which will face new challenges from the east.
