Summary:
The purpose of this study is to raise the issue of the formation of a Common European Defense. Therefore, following a historical outline of the course to the aforementioned concept, the basic institutional foundations on which the possibility of a realistic narrative are presented while are clarified too by NATO's role in the whole project. At the same time, the problems and challenges that European states are facing in order to achieve this primary objective, as well as the actions to which they are directed, are addressed. Finally, possible scenarios for ensuring the longevity of the EU are being considered and the conclusions are presented.
