The mediational role of Humor Styles in the relationship between Early Maladaptive Schemas and Well-being
Summary:
Humor, early maladaptive schemas and satisfaction with life are part of the universal human experience and they have immediate impact on our mental health. Humor was considered for many decades an undivided concept, however since 2003 it has prevailed to distinguish it based on whether it is adaptive or maladaptive and whether it is focused on the self or the interpersonal relationships. Early maladaptive schemas (EMS), on the other hand, are consisted of beliefs, memories and emotions. They are developed during childhood and adolescence, and they may relate to oneself or one’s interpersonal relationships. There are 18 schemas, grouped in 5 domains. Finally, well-being refers to a person’s cognitive and affective subjective life evaluations. The current research is focused on the cognitive aspect of well-being, called satisfaction with life. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediational role of humor styles in the relationship between schema domains and satisfaction with life. Our sample consists of 160 university students, most of them female, with an average age of 24 years. The mediation analysis confirmed largely our hypothesis, as both adaptive and maladaptive humor factors, as well as both self-enhancing and self-defeating humor styles played mediational role in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and satisfaction with life. However affiliative and aggressive humor styles did not mediate the said relationship. In other words, a person with low scores on EMS is more likely to use adaptive humor styles, which in turn leads to higher scores on satisfaction with life. Inversely, higher scores on EMS correlate with more use of maladaptive humor styles and lower satisfaction with life scores. These findings could possibly be applied in Schema Therapy, or any therapeutic procedure, mostly through the therapist focus in the different humor styles that he/she, or the client brings into the therapy.
