The communication policy of the museums. Study case: The historical museum of Crete.
Summary:
The present work deals with the concept of communication as it characterizes and permeates most of the elements that employ a museum. More specifically, an attempt will be made to record a quotation for communication in general and how it is expressed in the museum organisations more specifically. The work is structured in four chapters, each of which is working on a different subject, with the simultaneous pursuit with them to illustrate the connection of all issues introduced, from the expert to general and vice versa.
The first chapter includes theoretical issues for communication, as they are reflected both in everyday life and in more complex aspects of society, while trying to decode the concept and the categories it has. Cultural marketing will also be presented briefly in this chapter. The theory of communication will specialized in the cultural organizations and in particular later in the museums, presenting the forms that communication takes in a museum environment.
The second chapter will introduce the various aspects the concept of management poses a series of key issues relating to a museum. With the central axis of "cultural management", as it has been developed in recent decades, will be analysed to the extent that it allows the topic of work, issues of administration, financial management, human resources, as well as the contribution of Cultural management in general in the proper functioning of a museum.
The case study, i.e. the historical Museum of Crete, occupies the largest part and constitutes the third chapter. It includes a presentation of the majority of the representative features of this museum: history, collections, infrastructure, management, human resources, educational and other activities. Emphasis is given on the museum's periodic exhibitions, as one aspect of its communication policy. The chapter concludes with a SWOT analysis, which essentially gathers and focuses on strengths and weaknesses, on opportunities and threats. The project is completed with an audience survey for the Historical Museum of Crete about the reflection that this has on the local society of Heraklion, Crete, as well as the other resident and foreign visitors. The results could contribute to the operation, activity and movements of the museum, and improve or shape on the basis of this action the next day.
