Atmospheric Pollution and Effects on the Respiratory System
Summary:
In the first chapter we analyze the basic elements of atmospheric pollution, the sources of atmospheric pollution, and the role of the atmosphere. The second chapter deals with tropospheric ozone, the relationship and the interaction of the climate with tropospheric ozone and its origin. Also reference is made to nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides as well as to atmospheric pollution measurement techniques using simulation models. In the third chapter there is an extensive reference to the problem of atmospheric pollution in Greece and more specifically to atmospheric pollution in Athens. The fourth and fifth chapters deal exclusively with atmospheric pollution and its effects on the human body, Anatomy of the respiratory system, airway histology, histology of alveolar tissue as well as histology of lung lymphatic tissue are described. Then reference is made to the effects of tropospheric ozone and NOx, SOx on the human body. More specifically, the possible mechanisms for the influence of atmospheric pollution on asthmatics, the various allergies due to air pollution, the retention or deposition of inhalants, the absorption of suspended particles as well as their penetration into the human respiratory system, as well as the mechanisms of clearance and inactivation of inhaled substances. Reference is also made to the cardiovascular effects of atmospheric pollution as we know that air pollution and particulates do not only affect the respiratory system but also the cardiovascular with serious effects on the health of the human body.
