Museums as cultural bridges in anniversary celebrations context. Designing actions for the National Historical Museum of Athens and the Budapest History Museum
Summary:
In recent years cultural and technological developments have increased focus on the knowledge that originates from potential links between cultural objects and/or natural spaces. Museums, through their collections mobility, in the context of broader cultural exchanges, have the potential to promote international collaborations, utilize common elements and connect with different approaches of history, addressed to a wide audience. Thus, historical knowledge, as a complex concept that varies according to the social, cultural and epistemological context (Nakou, 2000a) can be regarded as a means of connecting man with the social environment.
In the context of the celebration of the two hundredth anniversary of the Greek Revolution, the dissertation, based on the ability of the National Historical Museum of Athens to develop bridges of communication with museums from other countries explores how this dialogue can emerge from a periodic exhibition. In an attempt to locate these communication channels, through elements that drift away from exclusive national historical narratives, the dissertation proposes a periodic exhibition of objects from the collections of the Budapest History Museum in the halls of the Athens National Historical Museum's permanent exhibition. The motive of the selection of the Budapest History Museum was the fact that within the framework of the Postgraduate Program "Museum Studies", the writer held a three-month internship at the Museum.
An essential tool for the study, as a solid theoretical background which could accompany the project of an equivalent museological proposal was the EUNAMUS research project, which studied the national museums of thirty-seven European countries between 2010 and 2013. At the same time, for the purposes of the dissertation were studied the reports of European programs concerning cultural exchanges between museums as well as collections mobility matters in reference to the impact on the public.
Thesis, setting as a basis the historical period during which the Greek peninsula and the Hungarian zone of the Habsburg Monarchy were under Ottoman occupation, leverages the central narrative of selected thematic units of the Athens National Historical Museum's permanent exhibition and attempts to reveal unexpected and familiar links with selected objects from the collections of the Budapest History Museum. Furthermore, based on subsequent, pivotal historical periods seeks to highlight through the objects, aspects of their aesthetic, social and political dimension.
The National Historical Museum of Athens, through the proposed exhibition, address the general public and invites the visitors to approach history as a process of exploration and discovery while listening to the convergences or the deviations presented before them through familiar or less intimate associations and notions.
