Education in the Sciences in Greek Schools in Constantinople in the 19th Century
Summary:
This paper attempts to present the education provided in the Sciences that Greek-speaking students were able to receive in the 19th century in Constantinople. The object of our study is both the content of Science Teaching and the structures related to their teaching within and outside schools.
They are presented the official operators responsible for the education of the Greek population of Istanbul, but also operators that were important in the promotion and teaching of Sciences such as the educational association clubs.
In what has to do with the teaching work of the schools, it is examined the content of the teaching of Physics as it appears, mainly through the textbooks of the period, and secondarily through the curriculum, since the programs that were published and implemented are minimum, towards the end of the period we are examining. We also follow the acceptance and the position of the classes of Sciences in the evolution of the 19th century as derived from the timetables and other historical sources. At the same time, special reference is made to the use of the experiment during the teaching process and to the establishment of experimental physics laboratories.
Finally, we will argue that at the end of the 19th century, the students of Constantinople were given high-level education in the Sciences considering the situation of the Hellenism of that period.
