Augmented Reality in Interpreting Museum Collections. Digital Application: "Wearing the Past at the Benaki Museum"
Summary:
This thesis was prepared in the framework of the Postgraduate Program "Museum Studies" of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Western Attica. The focus is on designing an interactive digital museum application, where New Technologies and their tools are used to deliver the content of selected objects to the public through a new, original approach. The title concentrates on the theme: Augmented Reality in Interpreting Museum Collections. Application design: "Wearing the Past at the Benaki Museum". The media of augmented reality are exploited for a new interpretive approach to clothing, attributed through 19th-century engravings of the homonymous collection of Modern Greek Art, Painting, Drawings and Engravings by the Benaki Museum. The aim of the second part of the case study was to highlight the social dimension of historical clothing through the work of the Collection, in association with and ongoing dialogue with the authentic clothing of the showcases in the respective halls of the Museum, as well as with other costume museum collections. The research methodology was based on bibliographic research, field research, collection and study of examples and practices, so that the resulting data could be presented and analyzed. Through the above procedure, the presentation of the proposal, the way it was implemented and the objectives pursued were made. Annexes 1 and 2 are directly related to this last section, as the former contains information on Athenian clothing, while the second corresponds to the low-accuracy prototypes as developed in the Narralive Mobile Player program (Vrettakis et al. 2019). Annex 3 lists the precise questionnaire and statistical data obtained, and the general conclusions thereof, as well as the overall process of the present investigation, are detailed in the list.
