Summary:
Apart from their economic contribution and in consistence with their social profile, financial institutions seek to strengthen the historical culture and economic education of the public as well as to provide a source of preservation and promotion of the historical and cultural heritage. To achieve this goal during the last decades, financial institutions started to create cultural sections so as to give prominence to and promote banking proofs, archival material and object collections originating from their operation as well as the operation of other relevant institutions interacting with them throughout their historical path.
According to the nature, character and mission of each institution, the audience they address and the messages they want to convey, financial institutions create cultural frameworks of action comprising the creation of museums and archives with activities of extroversion, and exhibitions. The thematic content is mainly dedicated to money, the history and the role of individual institutions or the broader banking, monetary, economic, social, political and cultural history. As a result of their supervisory role in the economy, many national central banks also give emphasis to the financial education of the public.
In Greece, the central bank and the four systemic banks have developed separate sections of a cultural nature addressing the public with a mission to communicate their role, functions and contribution to the Greek economy and society, to present recent Greek monetary and economic history, to demonstrate the importance of their archives and the role of money. These units comprise the Museum of the Bank of Greece, the Historical Archives of the National Bank of Greece, the Historical Archives, the Numismatic Collection and the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank in Corfu of Alpha Bank, the Historical Archives of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation and Historical Archives of Eurobank.
In this context, the Historical Archives of the National Bank of Greece decided to create permanent exhibition venues, where the history of the Bank and the evolution of Greek banknotes emerge through archival evidence including the history of the Aspioti-Elka company of graphic arts. At the same time, it conducts actions of extroversion, promotion and exhibition of its archival material and collections, which are oriented to both the academic and scientific audience as well as to students and to the public. Publications, conferences, seminars, speeches as well as guided visits, periodical exhibitions, educational programmes, media shows, participation in the International Museum Day are some indicative actions for serving the purpose of communicating the Archives’ historical wealth to the public.
