The results of therapeutic exercise otago in eldely people with mild cognitive impairment
Summary:
Mild cognitive impairment greatly affects brain functions such as memory, orientation, speech, thinking and basic motor functions. The incidence of the disease reaches 10% in people over 70 years of age, while in older people it increases from 20% to 40% in people over 85 years.
The disease appears to be multifactorial, as recent scientific findings have linked it to the presence of a particular apolipoprotein, while other diseases, such as coronary heart disease and depression, play a key role. In recent years, lifestyle and lack of physical activity play a key role in the onset and progression of the disease. Physical activity works as a medicine, especially in old age and protects the reduction of bone and muscle mass, increases muscle strength, range of motion and balance of the elderly.
The purpose of this review is to highlight the effect of Otago exercise in older people with mild cognitive impairment. This form of exercise began in New Zealand, where it was developed, proving to be one of the most effective forms of workout to reduce falls and injuries in older people. In particular, this review focuses on elderly people with mild cognitive impairment.
Parameters considered to reveal the role of this form of exercise in those patients include upper and lower extremity muscle strength and power, flexibility, cardiorespiratory endurance, walking speed and balance by age and gender. Neuropsychological tests are also used to assess the level of cognitive impairment.
Otago aims to increase and maintain muscle strength, balance and functional gait through simple exercises, with beneficial effects on one's mobility and the ultimate goal of self-service and autonomy. Concerning the combination of old age and mild cognitive impairment, these patients appear to be of particular benefit, as numerous studies correlate the individual's cognitive status with physical activity levels.
