The Effect of Smoking on the Rehabilitation of Patients with Respiratory Problems

International smoking is probably the only determinant of health risk, but also a determinant of mortality, which has the potential to be preventable nonetheless. Smoking is responsible for many diseases, such as many cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral vasculopathy, and peptic ulcer, while also causing significant effects on and development of fetuses and newborns.
Many of the effects of this habit on health are reversible, even when one stops this action in middle age, while most of the smoking cessation treatments have a good cost-effectiveness. Since the duration of this habit is the most important risk factor for mortality, the main purpose of treatment is to have an immediate cessation of smoking as well as to prevent relapse.
Guidelines have been developed by several different medical organizations with the main aim of stopping this habit in order to significantly improve interventions aimed at nicotine addiction and to have an upward trend in stopping rates. Pharmaceutical therapy plays a key role in these guidelines.
The purpose of this work is to study in detail the important role that this habit plays in the rehabilitation of patients with respiratory problems. In order to achieve this goal, a bibliographic review will be carried out, involving international, Greek and online bibliographic sources, so that by the end of this work we will be able to draw the best possible conclusions.
