Investigating Teachers' Needs on Intercultural Readiness: Educational Techniques - Training - Obstacles
Summary:
ABSTRACT

In Greece, Intercultural Education appears at the end of the 1980s as a response to the needs and demands of modern multicultural society. Greek teachers are one of the most important social groups that are called to work constructively in the new educational environment, facing daily multicultural issues. The arrival of a large number of economic migrants and refugees in recent years in Greece, has contributed to the creation of a multicultural social composition. As a direct consequence of this state of affairs, such as "identity", "diversity", "multiculturalism", "intercultural competence", etc., come into the forefront especially in the field of education and impose the need for modern, effective educational policies, which will be able to meet the needs of modern society and create favorable conditions for the harmonious coexistence and the smooth integration of foreign pupils into the Greek reality. In this process, the role of the school and especially of the teacher, through which the principles and objectives of "intercultural education" will be translated into practice, will lead the students to become critically minded, active citizens inspired by the principles respect, understanding and acceptance of diversity. In the empirical research included in this paper, it has emerged that educators of primary education are, for the most part, intercultural, recognize and respond to the teaching needs of classes with culturally, linguistically, religiously and socially diverse student population.
