Summary:
This study belongs to the field of modern folklore studies and examines the Chanter’s society in the city of Volos, in Thessalia, Greece and how byzantine music is highlighted through its activities. It is a kind of local cultural association of a particular region that focuses on the promotion and diffusion of a particular element of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is the Byzantine Music. Having its own unique identity, it is a deliberate case study with spacetime frameworks. It is based on the interviews of important persons - representatives of the Association and the attempt of the writer for a holistic approach. At the end, they lead to interesting conclusions.
The Association's Byzantine Chorus is its most important instrument. The subject that becomes obvious from the first minutes of the interviews. Their acceptance and support by the local community and, first of all, by the Metropolitan of Dimitriados’, encourage their work which already counts almost 45 years of systematic work and presence in the chanting world and events, highlighting the art they represent and their local identity in Greece and abroad.
This survey is divided into two parts: the first is a detailed presentation and description of the association’s recommendation. The terms which are being analyzed refer to the conditions and the rights of the members, the purpose and the financial purposes concerned. A special part of the study is occupied with its social and cultural activities with the participation of the choir, as well as the scientific direction through conferences, seminars and lectures through which byzantine music is prominent.
The second part presents detailed indicative suggestions of teaching Byzantine Music in non-formal Education, where the participants are introduced to the content of Byzantine Music and Psaltic Art. The educational proposals are developed on axes related to elements of understanting the subject through oral tradition and its experiential learning, information about its representatives, ways of teaching and its dissemination, elements related to its operating environment and performance as well as its morphological and folklore characteristics.
