Museums and older people. How museums can approach and help people who live with dementia and their care partners.
Summary:
Dementia and its various forms with most common form the Alzheimer's disease are considered to be the 21st century epidemic. The main reason that people living with dementia have increased numerically is the increase in life expectancy as the major risk factor for dementia is age. Scientists have focused their efforts on finding treatment through various researches, but this has not yet been possible. For this reason, the medical science has approached other disciplines, such as the museum, art and culture industry to find ways in order to improve the quality of life of people with dementia and their care partners.
The purpose of this work is to examine and highlight ways in which cultural institutions can approach and help people who live with dementia and their care partners. For this reason, dementia, a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning, and its various forms (symptoms, forms, stages, medical and non-medical treatment) and activities that cultural organizations offer for elders with dementia and their care partners, such as educational programs and exhibitions, are initially present-ed. Subsequently, the development (design, implementation, evaluation) of an educational program aimed at people living with dementia and their care partners at Katakouzenos House Museum, a house-museum in central Athens, is analyzed. The final conclusions are based on the theoretical approach of the subject, but also on the practical part of the work and the development of the program.
