The transgenerational transmission of Cyprus War Trauma to the survivor’s adult offsprings
Summary:
Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the transgenerational transmission and displacement of the trauma suffered by the war survivors of the Turkish invasion in Cyprus in 1974 to their adult offsprings. It is a hermeneutic, qualitative research that studies the transgenerational transmission of the aforementioned trauma from the first to the second generation, which did not experience the 1974 invasion. Twelve war survivors’ offsprings, who were born and raised in Cyprus, participated in the research. The data collection was conducted with semi-structured interviews through the cyber application Skype. The data were then analysed through the Hermeneutic Thematic Analysis method of qualitative data. The results demonstrated that the transgenerational transmission occurs through social, educational and family representations, through the communication style that is selected from each family and through each family’s methods of nurturance. Additionally, it was shown that trauma transmission herein affects offsprings, who feel disconnected from their parent’s homeland, to which they feel they should belong. This finding was associated with the ways the offsprings had internalised the trauma and incorporated it to their personal life, either integrating it as resilience and power, or belittling its meaning.
