Construction of meanings for probability concepts by students who play and modify a digital game
Summary:
We live in a complex world where in every step we take we have to make decisions, with uncertain outcome, affecting our lives, but also the rest of our fellow human beings. The parameters should be seen as a great many, usually changing rapidly and our decisions involve a risk we should bear in mind. The school shall provide supplies for tomorrow's citizens to face any problems of everyday life by using possibilities. The connection of teaching mathematics in realistic context with real life situations has for many years been the subject of research in the field of teaching of Mathematics. In the present research we try to highlight the connections between teaching probabilities and digital games focusing on the use of actual data from everyday life, when students play a digital game making decisions with uncertain consequences in a secure environment called ChoiCo. The teaching approach we propose is consistent with the principles of constructivism for the construction of knowledge, the creation of meaning for the concepts of probability by the students through an appropriately designed educational game that can not easily be implemented with standard instruments. The aim is to highlight the procedures by which students will use their knowledge of probabilities to make decisions by assessing the data from the game.
