“Clavis Aurea”: A location and image-based augmented reality game for the local history
Summary:
The purpose of the present research is the design, the development and the evaluation of a mobile game called "Clavis Aurea" that combines location-based and imaged-based augmented reality. The mobile game deals with issues of local history. More specifically, the design of the game's script was based on students of a Primary School of Naxos, taking advantage of the cultural significance of the archaeological site of Naxos Castle. Actionbound and Layar Creator platforms were used for the development of the digital game, while students in the 5th Grade of Primary School, teachers of various educational levels, the researcher and postgraduate teachers in ICT participated in the formative evaluation of the game. As qualitative data collection tools were used those of participatory observation, interviewing, group discussion and student handouts. The results of the research demonstrated the high levels of the usability and attractiveness of the mobile game and additionally, the desire for future use by the students. The game has also been described as a useful teaching tool for highlighting the cultural heritage. In conclusion, suggestions were made to improve the game in terms of its complexity, enhancing users’ interaction with local history, and the various problems that arose due to the internet connection and the small number of mobile devices.
