The use of invasive techniques in the treatment of postherpeti neuralgia. Review
Summary:
The aim of the present systematic review is the evaluation of the efficacy of the available therapeutic methods for the treatment of the postherpetic neuralgia. The postherpetic neuralgia is a syndrome of chronic peripheral neuropathetic pain and it is due to neural damage which is provoked by the herpes virus - 3, also known as the herpes zoster of the chickenpox (VZV). It is considered to be complication of the herpes zoster and it appears in a percentage of 15% to 20%. It is quite a painful condition and it can influence the total quality of the patient life.
There is an amount of pharmaceutics which have indication for usage in the postherpetic neuralgia, as well as intervening techniques which aim to the remission of the symptomatology and the improvement of the condition of the patient. The therapy in each case is individualized in the pain doctor’s office, since the experience of pain is something personal and every patient has special needs and suffers the tension of pain differently.
In the therapeutic algorithm of postherpetic neuralgia many medicines are included such as, analgesics, topical anesthetics, antidepressants, opioids and antiepileptic drugs which help to relieve the pain and improve the quality of patient’ life. It is necessary for the patient to be in constant surveillance by the doctor so as to have the securitization of the medicine or the combination of the medicines for a better result. Nevertheless, if the therapeutic conservative treatment provokes undesirable side effects and pharmaceutical interactions, there are few intervening techniques, like nerves block, central or peripheral, and techniques of neuroalteration through neurostimulation.
