"Knowledge, views and expectations of parents with a child with speech disorder and difficulties in decoding and reading comprehension"

Speech and communication disorder is a disorder that is addressed to a small percentage of the student population, but affects students at a psychosocial and learning level, sometimes affecting their adult lives. The purpose of the present study is to investigate and ascertain the knowledge, attitudes and expectations of parents of students with speech disorders. The study involved 79 parents of students, mainly mothers, from schools in Corinth, Thebes and East Attica. Most of them believe that reading and therefore understanding a written text are significantly affected by their child's speech disorder. For this reason, more than half went to a speech therapy center. They also argued that teachers do not have the knowledge necessary to deal with and help students with the disorder. Thus, they consider it necessary to have a speech therapist in schools.
