Student' s needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness in the framework of the creative course Euromath
Summary:
According to Self-Determination theory (SDT) the satisfaction of the basic phycological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness is very important for the reinforcement of motives for learning. In this research we describe the process of work of a group of high school students for the European Students Conference Euromath. The center goal of this group was the creation and dramatization of an original theatrical play of small duration which would present and explain a mathematical issue. In particular we described the ways the group worked, the process of the development of the play as well as the final presentation. Through the interviews with the students we investigated in which ways the environment that was created is connected with the needs of the students for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. The qualitative analysis suggested that these needs were significantly covered. Furthermore, we observed that students created new connections with Mathematics. The results of this study confirm the existing studies while at the same time they indicate a connection between the needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness and students view about mathematics
