The role of school management and leadership in the making of an effective school environment.Views of teachers of the secondary education system
Summary:
The purpose of the current dissertation is the study of the perceptions and intentions of secondary education teachers about the role played by the leader in shaping school effectiveness.
The quantitative methodological approach was employed in the present study and the sample of the research were teachers (N= 108) who serve in secondary education of East Attica. A research tool designed by the researcher in the form of questionnaire <> was developed for the collection of data with a five- step upward evaluation scale.
The results of the research indicate that leadership at school unit-level can be the most important factor in achieving objectives. They show that the organization and structure of the Greek education system do not allow the emergence of leaders and the administrative responsibilities encumber the top of the pyramid of the system, while the subordinates have exclusively executive responsibilities. They confirm that the positive school environment is a prerequisite for the qualitative upgrading of education, which eliminates obstacles and stimulates the moral and professional interest of teachers. They highlight the lack of professionalism and evaluation culture, as the dominant attitude of teachers. They verify the necessity of good interpersonal relationships and identify inefficiency in communication between the members of the school community. They demonstrate the strong need for teachers’ continuous professional development and make educational management training programs a key condition for administrative positions.
