Summary:
My thesis explores the representation of folk humour and the depiction of elements of popularity (laikotita) in selected plays of Dimitris Psathas (1907-1979). The criteria for the selection of the plays were their chronological proximity among the plays and their popularity. The popularity of the plays was judged based on the references to the plays in the press of the period. At the beginning of the main part, I touch upon the definition of folk theatre and its components. I sketch a definition of the notion of humour from a historical perspective, mentioning its links to laugh and its theories. The next chapter refers to the term comedy and namely the farce comedy in Greece alongside a reference to Dimitris Psathas’ contribution to the theatre in Modern Greece. Aiming to provide a better understanding of the socio-political context, I have included a chapter that gives a broad-brush picture of the financial and political circumstances of the period as well as the types of people found in the inter-war and post-war Greece. The next chapter includes brief references to the plot of the plays along side a commentary for each play. What follows includes the analysis of the humour in the selected plays. I take into consideration two parameters for my analysis, i.e. i)the plot and ii)the language and style. At the end, there is a final chapter dedicated to the characters that were examined and the conclusions.
