Summary:
Introduction: Preterm birth remains an unsolved problem in modern medicine, and this can be proved by the fact that despite the impressive progress of medical technology and research, the incidence of preterm birth is still rising to some degree.
Aim: This current thesis is a review of the international literature on the correlation of stress in pregnancy and preterm birth.
Material & Methods: The research for information was carried out on the following databases: Pubmed, Library of Congress, UpToDate, The Cochrane Library and the database of World Health Organization. The research resulted in 1297 articles, which were limited in 119, taking into account temporal proximity, impact factor of the journal, time of publication, and the size of specimen.
Conclusions: The causes of preterm birth are not fully known. The aetiology of preterm birth is multifactorial and many different pathophysiological pathways are involved. Stress in pregnancy can cause premature delivery through neuroendocrine, immunological and vascular mechanisms. Until there is clear clinical guidance based on scientifically substantiated data, prenatal care providers should certainly continue to evaluate psycho-social factors and inform pregnant women about the research documenting the effect of chronic stress on preterm labour.
