The association between individual factors and parenting dimensions with the establishment of friendships for adolescents students of fisrt and second grade
Summary:
Abstract
Parenting dimensions have a great impact on the formation of the adolescents’ social relationships later. Adolescents whose parents have adopted an authoritarian or permissive parenting style demonstrate inadequate social skills in relationships with peers. On the contrary, parents with authoritative rearing styles encourage their children to form much more functional relationships with peers and friendships of higher quality. In light of this acknowledgement, the aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between parenting dimensions, demographic factors and the quality of adolescents’ friendships. The sample consisted of 310 pupils who attended the first and the second class of senior high schools in Attiki and filled out self-report questionnaires on parenting, several sociometric factors and adolescents’ friendship quality. Findings suggest that, gender, age as well as family status are associated with teenager’s friendships. Actually, gender and age were found to be the most significant predictors of adolescents’ friendships quality followed by mother’s parenting style. Specifically, girls are more likely to note higher levels of help and companionship in their friendships compared to boys. First grade students were also more probable to exhibit higher levels of reliable alliance and intimacy than second grade students. Additionally, mother’s emotional warmth predicted a low percentage of variance in companionship, help, self-validation and emotional warmth levels of adolescents close relationships.
