Attitudes and Forms of Noble Power in Venetian Zante. The Makris Family and the Orlov Revolt
Summary:
The second half of the 18th century, was a period of visible social transformations for the Ionian islands under Venetian rule, which at the same time was accompanied by an upgrowth towards the Venetian possessions due to interference from the Venetian Metropolis. In addition, due to various reformative attempts from the middle of the century onwards, tension in the Ionian Sea was rising under the constant presence of the Ruling Venice. That was visible in the judicial system with the prosecution of various important and high ranking local noblemen (cittadini), who were accused under charges of using arbitrary power (autorità privata), suffered inquisitional practices and were punished as examples towards social order. These developments happened at the same time of some “expansion” attempts by Russia in the Mediterranean and the outbreak of the first Russo-Ottoman war (1768-1774), with Russian agents meeting some very strong allies in the eyes of the Ionian noblemen. There was actually some pro-Russian tendency in the hears of the Ionian-Venetian subject, which was obvious due to the intervention of a vast amount of them during the Orlov Revolt (1770), despite the strict venetian restraints on the involvement of the subjects on the matter.
This current project, takes place geographically on the island of Zante and focuses on shedding light on various activities of Count Ioannis Makris, probably the most prominent nobleman of the island during the mid 18th century, and leader of a party of regal families, who had total power and controlled every aspect of the local public life. His presence radiated respect and fear on others, and the control he had on his command has turned him into a true and autonomous aspect of power on the island, and in many cases, it allowed him to substitute even for the local Venetian governor. After all, there was a vast network of dependent people (dipendenti) forming around him coming from all levels of the social structure. This exact unchecked power he held, and the huge influence he exerted on the crowds, brought him in the sights of the Venetian oligarchy and had him facing imprisonment.
Makris, comes out as one of the most prominent negotiators of the Russian agents, that acted during the early days of the Russo-Ottoman war on the south Balkan areas, and the mastermind behind the mass migration of Zacynthians to the Peloponnese, when the Orlov Revolt started. Adopting the theories that the examining of the elites could be the key of understanding historic changes, for the exact reason that they seem to resist on socioeconomic shifts, but at the same time while they could be seen as factors of social progress, Makris' case could be a case study that on one hand this connects the Ionian with larger geopolitical developments, but on the other, it seals the relationships of the dominants and their subjects in the Venetian Stato da Mar, during the emergence of the Russians in the Mediterranean.
