Fluorine and fluorine compounds, uses & health and environmental impacts
Summary:
Fluorine is a member of the halogen family and is characterized as an extremely active and poisonous chemical element. It has the ability to compose chemical reactions with virtually all the available chemical elements and is found in abundancy in the universe and the bark of the earth.
The current study initially focused upon description of various chemical uses of fluorine, with an emphasis upon molecular rearrangement, electron emission, drug activity-permeability-metabolism and pharmacokinetic properties, SF5 functional group, as well as positron emission tomography.
The next part of the study referred to particular fluorine uses, regarding fluoridation of water-salt and milk, fluoridated gels and varnishes, as well as toothpastes and mouth-washing solutions against caries.
The most important impacts of fluorine usage were investigated thereafter, based upon findings related to the nervous system, cardiovascular system, liver, kidneys, reproductive system and bones.
The last part of the study analyzed the environmental impacts of fluorine usage, in terms of fluorine levels in drinking water areas, based upon the criterion of geographical location. Furthermore, a reference was made in terms of fluorine levels in ambient air and the way they are related to conditions of environmental pollution.
