Summary:
It is widely acknowledged that the levels of physical activity have a direct impact on the health of individuals. Non communicative diseases, such as diabetes, heart conditions and stroke, can be prevented if people reach and maintain sufficient levels of physical activity within their daily routine. It is therefore paramount that health practitioners and health organizations have valid and reliable assessment tools for measuring physical activity of individuals. Questionnaires are an easy and low cost way to measure physical activity. In particular, the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) is a physical activity questionnaire that is used within the STEPS surveillance program of the World Health Organization (W.H.O). It can be both interviewer and self-administrated. The original GPAQ was developed for English speaking populations and there are many other language versions available. With the present project we followed well accepted guidelines for translation and cultural adaptation of health related questionnaires intending to develop a Greek version of the GPAQ that would ensure semantic, idiomatic and experiential equivalence in relation to the original version. To assess the latter, an evaluation of comparability of language and similarity of interpretability between the back-translated version (GPAQ-BT) and the original version (GPAQ) was conducted. The final Greek GPAQ-GR version was tested for content validity using a panel of experts that rated the relevance of each item with the construct of interest, which is physical activity. This pilot study presents a complete translation and cultural adaptation of the GPAQ to the Greek language and culture and also assessed one aspect of the Greek version’s content validity. We consider this to be a good starting point for further research on its psychometric and measurement properties for potential use if proven to be both reliable and valid for assessing physical activity of Greek speaking individuals.
