The role of hormones in the human body, the effects of endocrine disruptors on health and ecosystems
Summary:
For the past 60 years, chemicals have been present in everyday life as they are either ingredients of many products used daily by humans such as parabens, or they are by-products of incomplete combustion that are inevitably produced in the manufacture of other goods such as dioxins and furans or used as insecticides-pesticides such as DDT.
The constant exposure of humans and animals, willingly or unwillingly, to these chemicals has significant effects on the health of organisms as it directly affects the action of the Endocrine System. For this reason, the substances that show an action similar to the aforementioned were called Endocrine Disrupting Compounds.
The endocrine system is a highly sensitive organ system and any interference with it can disorganize the whole organism, causing serious problems, mainly in reproduction and metabolism. Particularly significant are the effects of endocrine disruptors on wildlife and the environment, as their ability to easily disintegrate, bioaccumulate and biomass, causes toxicity problems.
For this reason, it is considered particularly necessary to remove them from the urban wastewater which ends up in water receivers but also from drinking water with specialized treatment methods (such as oxidation).
