Research on year 6 and 7 students' ideas about the hetero luminosity or the self-luminosity of the moon as well as the factors that affect them
Summary:
The present research examines alternative ideas of students at primary school regarding the self or hetero luminosity of the Moon. The research was carried out using an open-ended questionnaire filled out by 176 students of the 5th and 6th grade. Of those students, 82 were participating in extra curriculum STEM classes and were selected from 11 public schools and the rest 94 belonged to the general population and were selected from 4 public schools. All selected schools were in the area of Athens and Piraeus. In total 131 (74,4%) students supported hetero luminosity of the Moon and 45 (25,6%) students supported self-luminosity. Qualitative analysis of the data revealed the existence of subjective alternative ideas that affect the supporters of self-luminosity. Furthermore, after quantitative analysis a) No significant difference was observed in the answers between the general population and STEM samples b) There was a significant difference in the answers in relation to the students’ class.
