''Uniform or Adapted teaching material''?: An evaluation survey on teaching Greek as L2
Summary:
Abstract
The purpose of the current thesis is to investigate whether the development of a uniform course material for Greek as L2 is possible to serve the needs of more than one classes, as well as the features and possible modifications that are likely to be incorporated. Τhe communicative approach and, in particular, the task-based learning teaching method was the main pillar for the development of the current pedagogical material, which addresses the needs of the A2 CEFR level. For its evaluation, interviews were conducted before its use ('pre-use evaluation') with seven teachers of Greek as L2 to students with different learning profiles. The research highlights that it is not possible to apply a uniform course teaching material, suitable for each student audience, without modifications based on student needs. The proposed adjustments include among other things the volume of grammatical phenomena provided by the Curriculum, the addition of mechanical exercises and the use of various means for supporting lower level students (e.g collaborative teaching, audiovisual media). At the same time, the effectiveness of the material seems to be related to its flexibility, and more specifically the integration of some basic characteristics that are positively evaluated for students with a variety of learning profiles. The interviewed teachers indicated the material’s flexible structure, the variety of activities, the use of authentic material (more suitable for teaching Greek as a second and not as a foreign language), as well as its intercultural character. Therefore, flexible teaching materials may be considered as an important teaching tool, that can be adapted in order to accommodate student needs and expanded with other activities or supplementary material in order to make language teaching more effective.
