Summary:
The present thesis investigates the speech acts of thanking and responding to thanks produced by (55) Greek native speakers in different contexts. Drawing data from a Discourse Completion Test (DCT), it attempts to explore the strategies that native speakers employ when expressing thanks and responding to thanks in formal (+P, +D) and informal (-P, -D) situations. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results indicates that in both speech acts, the speakers’ preferences in strategy use depend on the contextual parameters of Power (+/-P) and Distance (+/-D) that identify the relationship between the interlocutors of each situation. Therefore, despite some prefabricated phrases available, the different contexts complicate the appropriateness of the use of both speech acts. In addition to their complexity, their frequency in daily interactions as politeness strategies make their involvement in teaching -in the context of the teaching of Pragmatics- necessary. Some related teaching suggestions are presented in this thesis as well.
