Perspectives of dental care tourism in Greece
Over the past decade medical tourism has been identified as an increasingly developing field in healthcare. Internet-assisted technologies brought the ability for citizens from developing countries to collect information, to take decisions based on updated databases and to find the medical practitioner of their choice at their country of preference. Dental tourism is one of the most popular forms of medical tourism, as numerous dental clinics throughout the world provide low cost high-quality care and modern infrastructure services. Despite the increasing interest nevertheless, documented knowledge on this field is limited. The aim of the present review is to present dental tourism in Greece, as well as to provide an insight on its prospective development. Towards this aim, foreign and Greek literature was used as well as interviews with involved stakeholders published in reliable online resources. In conclusion, although Greece has a remarkably capable personnel and welcomes millions of visitors every year owning high quality tourism infrastructure, its share in the global dental tourism market is close to zero. During the past years considerable effort has been made to highlight the comparative advantages of dental services in Greece through cooperative clusters, under the support of public sector organizations and local governments. One of the main conditions that can ensure the success of this endeavour is the development of strategies for the promotion of quality of dental health-care that each patient can receive at a reasonable cost.
